Strange aroma in all my ciders.

Normally im around 6-7%. This last batch I dont have any records on since I was in the middle of moving and I kind of lost track. I also added the Candi syrup in secondary and caused a second fermentation, then it sat for 5 months. I have no idea what the OG was on this last one and dont know...

Strange aroma in all my ciders.

I need to, I agree. Living in south Florida makes it tough. Need to get a fridge or freezer with a temp control. Maybe soon. Do you think this would cause an alcohol aroma? I have brewed around 40 batches of beer as well with these temps and Alcohol aroma is never an issue. Then again, Im no...

Strange aroma in all my ciders.

I've brewed around 10 batches of cider. Everything from Saison yeast to Cider yeast. All with store bought 100% apple juice. They mostly come out with a great taste (the one im drinking now was made with a Saison yeast and Belgium candi syrup!) but they all have this sort of alcohol aroma. Once...

    Adding gelatin

Without thinking it through, I added Gelatin to my Cider before fermentation even started. I have never used it before and the directions just said to add "1 tsp per 6 gallons of must". So, I dumped it right in after dissolving in boiling water and cooling for one hour, and at the same time I...

Fermentation done with no Airlock activity?

Ah, thanks man. I think it might be my airlocks. They are my old, least favorite ones but all I had not in use. Im not concerned since they are Ciders and Cider has more room for error or off flavors, haha. Thanks for the input!

Fermentation done with no Airlock activity?

Its odd if that happened on both buckets! I use these buckets alot for primary, especially beers. Should I worry about the quality of the buckets?

Fermentation done with no Airlock activity?

Whats up gang! I did two 3 gallon batches of cider, using two different yeast strains and I saw something Ive never seen before when making cider (about 10 batches in). BOTH showed no activity in the airlock, after a week I decided to just open them up and get a reading. Turns out they...

Converting Igloo Cooler to Mash Tun Questions

Everything worked it was just loose, even when tightened to full capacity. I will get some hose washers (actually almost picked them up yesterday!) and hopefully that will work. Im assuming 5/8 would be the appropriate size?

Converting Igloo Cooler to Mash Tun Questions

I came across a free 5 gallon IGLOO orange round cooler for free. Just in time for my switch to all-grain. I plan on buying a 10 gallon rubbermaid next week to mash and plan on using this free cooler as a HLT. I searched online for a conversion parts list and was obviously really successful...

Ordered the Surly Cynic Kit from NB. Extra Hops, what to do?!

The recipes calls for 0.25 oz. of Columbus for 60 min. But they sent me a whole ounce of em. Because I have a Black IPA in secondary that I plan on dry hopping tomorrow, could I use the extra columbus to dry hop? Im a big fan of hoppy IPA's and most black IPA's vie had aren't hoppy enough...

    Odd smell in finished beer.

This happened with both beers. I fermented a little high (I live in Florida and even in "winter" it gets in the 80's). Mostly around 68-72. But I always kept in my yeasts' range.

    Odd smell in finished beer.

so how do i get rid of this? or what can i do to not have this happen?

    Odd smell in finished beer.

So im drinking my second batch of homebrew, a brown ale. my first was a pale ale. They both taste awesome but have a light "rotten egg" kinda smell going on. One was bottle conditioned and the second was force carbed in a keg. What can this be? I used distilled water on both (both were...

    New Brewer, fermentation help!

The recipe (remember this is my first batch) calls for a secondary fermentation, which i know generally clears up the beer, so should i wait a while before racking it or just go ahead since fermentation has dramatically slowed. I figured i would just wait another 5-10 days or so before going...
