I'm planning a little run of some pales and ipa and I'm gonna try adding the new wort to the previous yeast cake. Any tips or suggestions for this method?

This is not recommended. Pitching new wort on top of a previous yeast cake is a massive over pitch. The yeast cake from one brew will have sufficient yeast for four more brews.
Pour off the yeast cake, swirled up with remaining beer, into sanitized quart jars if your beer was a five gallon batch. Pint jars if less than five gallons.
Take a look at this pitch rate calculator for rinsed yeast.
