I need some help. What should I do about a fermenter that is over flowing? I pitched the yeast yesterday late afternoon, and it's going nuts! Take a look at the photo and let me know what I should do.

Thanks in advance. ImageUploadedByHome Brew1393280465.107029.jpg

blowoff tube. got any hoses that will fit over either the center "post" of the airlock or over the airlock itself? if so., make sure you sanitize it and have it going into a pan/bottle/some other container of sanitizer water

+1

I've been using a blow-off tube on everything because my fermenters are 5 gallon glass carboys I inherited from my dad through his dad. Eventually I will get a bigger fermenter, but these are working fine for right now as long as I use a 1" blow off tube. I just stick the other end into a pitcher full of a star san solution.

Thanks. I will look at what I got.

+2 i dont even bother with anything but a blow off anymore!!

Do you only have "S" style locks? If you only have "S" style then I'd run to you're LHBS and pick up a three-piece style lock and as others have suggested, slide a hose over the post of the airlock.

You can also pick up a hose barb union and plug it straight into the bung...I believe 3/8" will fit pretty snug. Lowes and Home Depot usually carry them.

How does this look? I made this very quickly out of spare brewing parts. Sorry about the Mickey Mouse towel. My daughter helped me out! ImageUploadedByHome Brew1393282567.159048.jpg

Looks fantastic, though I wonder why you put fluid into the airlock.

I've heard anecdotally that a bigger tube is better (one that fits directly into the carboy's bunghole), as smaller tubes can clog, build pressure, explode. Though I don't know how much of a risk that actually is.

Debrouwer, I put the water in there to see if my makeshift blow off tube had any leaks. It didn't...lol. There is no reason to empty it at this point...it's not hurting anything.

Seems like the smaller tubing is working for the moment. If I see any major issues with pressure build up or anything. I'll let you know.

Cool. I'm a total noob myself, as my second ever batch is fermenting as I type (a week and a day so far). My blow-off setup for my two batches was pretty much identical to yours, with a little tube coming out of a 3-piece airlock. Though I have a 6.5 gallon carboy, and I haven't actually had any overflow. It makes a satisfying bubbling noise letting you audibly hear the fermentation! :)
