Youre better to build a double slant boka. I have a 3" that in one run produced 190p but that also depends on what you're trying to make.

If you want bourbon, rum or brandies just go with a potstill
 
Why would it be illegal?
Federal law (in the US) states it's legal to own a still but illegal to distill alcohol without having either a distilled spirits permit or a federal fuel alcohol permit. It's been illegal since the prohibition of alcohol in 1920. The prohibition ended in 1933 and in 1978 home brewing was legalized. It just never happened for spirits sadly.
