i'm making an ipa and decided to go with just one kind of hops (columbus)
i was just going to use it at 60 20 5 during boil and then dry hop with it.
is this a bad idea? i figured it would simplify things and showcase what this variety has.

Sounds good to me. Maybe consider cutting the 20 minute addition and add a flame out addition

Yep, sounds good to me too. Columbus is an awesome hop for IPAs, and you'll like it. Cheers!

EDIT: I do a similar recipe with additions at 60, 20 and 5, and then dry hop. Your plan looks great.

just got done with a series of smashes. amarillo/MO, nelson sauvin/vienna, did a mosaic/simple malt bill, now im going to be doing an apollo/golden promise. its a great way to figure out what a hop/malt/yeast actually taste like.

I just did a Cascade SMaSH that went 60, 15, 10, 5, Flameout, Dryhop.
I agree its a great way to learn the flavors.
Ive got a Cenntenial SMaSH planned also with the same schedule.
