    AHA Governing Committee Elections

Hi. I am a longtime member of HomebrewTalk and the owner of a Micro Homebrew, a local homebrew supply shop north of Seattle. I am running for a spot on the American Homebrewers Association Governing Committee. Homebrewing and the brewing community has become a big part of my life over the last...

    Force carbonation pressures

I know this should obvious to me but I am just not getting it. If I enter the information into a carbonation calculator for 5 gallons it says I need 17psi. If I do everything the same but for 2 gallons it says 27psi. Why? Seems like under the same pressure the liquid would take on the same...

Blichmann Boilermaker as a mash tun

Does anyone out there use a Blichmann Boilermaker and the false bottom as a direct fired mash tun? I don't want to start using pumps or recirculating but I would like to be able to heat the mash from time to time and I thought it might be pretty easy to do that way.

Kegs from Cellar to the Kegarator

I am storing a couple of kegs in my cellar which is 55 degrees. I have them set at 17psi for 2.25 volumes according to the chart. When I move them to the Kegarator at 35 degrees do I let it get cold then bleed off the pressure and set to the 9 psi I the chart says?

Questions about opening a homebrew supply shop

I have an opportunity to lease a perfect space for a homebrew supply shop. I am comfortable with everything I will need to do to get it going except for where to buy the product. Are there homebrew supply shop wholesalers? Does anyone here run a shop and can point me in the right direction...

Transporting and serving my kegged beer

I have a refridgerator at home that I have installed 4 taps in. It works great. I am about to take to kegs to a party for the first time. I will just be keeping them in a tub with ice and serving with picnic taps. What kind of problems will I have? Will I have foaming issues? What can I do to...

    Calcium Sulfate addition question

I am going to brew the Burton Ale recipe I found in a Zymurgy magazine. The instructions say to adjust your waters calcium to 180-220 using calcium sulfate. I need to add 2 grams per gallon to achieve this according to Bru'n water. I am still having a little trouble understanding the water...

    Dry hopping question

I have a 5 gallon batch of American IPA and a 5 gallon batch of a Black IPA. They have been in kegs and under pressure for two weeks in my beer room that I keep at 51*. I want to enter them in a contest coming up and am going to dry hop them with 2oz of pellet hops each, directly in the keg...

Do you ferment in a bottling bucket?

This is probably old news for everyone but I didn't see it mentioned before. I fermented my last two beers in a bottling bucket. When it was time to keg I just put a sanitize hose on the spigot and ran it all into the keg in 2 minutes. If you are already doing this, I feel dumb. If your not...

    Some quick mash question

I am 25 minutes into a 90 minute mash. I undershot my temperature by 2 degrees and the mash was thicker than I thought it should be. You guessed it, I goofed making doing the math from quarts to gallons and ended up 150 instead of 152. Put the other gallon in now to raise the temperature some...

Can I condition in a growler?

I made a Irish Death clone that I will be kegging this weekend. I ended up with about 5.5 gallons so it won't all fit in the keg. I was thinking I would put half a gallon in a growler, throw about 3 or 4 carb drops, a few toasted oak chips and maybe a vanilla bean and see what happens. 1. If...

    Possible new Homebrew club?

I have been brewing for about a year and a half. I would like to get into a homebrew club to have some people to brew with and to get some feedback on my beer. I live near Mukilteo and there are a number of good clubs around (GEBL, BREW ect.) but they all are pretty big. I would like something...

    Carbonation at different temperatures

I am sure this has been explained before but I can't seem to find exactly what I am looking for. I keg my beer and put it in the kegerator with the pressure set at 12psi and leave it alone. This works great and it comes out carbonated the way I want after a week or two. Now I have built and...

    Diacetyl question.

I learned from NHC that not everyone can taste diacetyl in lower concentrations. I think I am one of those people because I wasn't getting if from a sample that was supposed to have some. Is there a way for me to know if my beer has excess diacetyl? I have a Oktoberfest lager that I made for...

    Saflager S23 question

I am going to try the Saflager S23 yeast for my Oktoberfest tomorrow. I read the instructions on the Fermentis website and it says to rehydrate at 73*. No problem there. My question is do I pitch it into the 52* wort or do I cool the rehydrated yeast down to the 50's before I pitch it?

Getting hot water to my HLT

I have a tankless hot water heater that has a flush kit on the bottom. I can hook a hose from my charcoal filter to the cold side and get filtered 140* water out of the hot side. The problem is, how do I get it to the HLT? My RV hose can't handle the temperature. I found a hose at the local...
