    My lame beer blog

A few months ago, I started a blog chronicling my home brewing. What sets my blog apart is how incredibly lame it is. You see, my main project right now is a series of beers based on the A Song of Ice and Fire books (Game of Thrones). There is other things in it too, beer drinking.... And other...

    stuck fermentation, or unfermentable sugars?

Made a rhubarb belgian ale recently, OG was 1.056, checked the gravity a week after fermentation started and it was only 1.020, checked again two weeks on and it is still 1.020. the sample tastes pretty balanced and dry from the rhubarb (theres about 3lbs in it). So my question is, is the...

Incredibly off nose help. dill. hairspray. butters.

Ok. So I just bottled a batch of beer, it's been sitting now for about 2 weeks at 65 degrees or so. Cracked open the first bottle and the smell really, really, really takes your breath away. It is like a mixture of dill, butter, and hairspray. It is the first time in almost 30 batches I've had...

How cold is too cold for California lager 2112?

Hey all, I'm planning on making a lager for the first time ever. I got a huge amount of yeast saved from my last yeast cake of California Lager yeast and want to try fermenting it in my basement which is currently 52F. I read on Wyeast website that this is too cold and with brewing a lighter...

    flame out hop addition question

I am going to invest in a wort chiller, but don't have one just now(they are heinously expensive like most brewing equipment in norway). For my first batch of all grain beer I just siphoned hot wort into the sanitized fermentor and let it chill down on its own with the lid on. My question is...

Help me with this strong gooseberry wit.

I'm looking to make a strong belgian special ale with mostly wheat extract. Here is my theory thusfar. Shooting for about 8-9%ABV Strong wheat notes balanced with tartness of gooseberry, using nelson sauvin hops to accentuate earthy, vinous flavors. I want it to have a definite wheat...

help me classify my beer for competition!

I don't have a picture of it, and it isn't even done fermentating yet to be honest so I'm not 100% sure if it will even be usable for this competition. But I think it is the only competition in Norway, and it is pretty well established and so I really want to enter something competetive. The...

    pitching onto secondary yeast cake?

I was just wondering if there was a difference between using a yeast cake from secondary vs. primary i.e. will the yeast be less viable in the secondary yeast cake because they have been working longer? Or once there is fresh food it don't really make a difference? I ask because after I...

    first brew labels!

Ahh my babies. I hope they taste as good as they look. I named it for my nephew Carter who was hospitalized just a few weeks after birth. He recovered and I decided to make my first brew in commemoration of his recovery and continuation of good health.

    Whats your favorite extract brand?

I've been looking for a thread on this but got lazy so am just going to post it myself. What's your favorite extract brand? I've only made 2 brews, but was really taken back by how different extracts tasted from the can side by side. So I was wondering if anyone had any favorites or if it...

    haggared airlock

My plastic airlock is loose in the rubber stopper. I can't see any activity but know that things are happening in the fermentor. Is there anything I can do to fix this like caulking or something, or does this not matter so much? Thanks! Matt

Designing a good black and tan.

Hey brew bros! This is my first time posting on this forum but I have been using it as a main research tool since starting homebrewing which has been about 3 weeks ago. (My first batch just got racked to the secondary!) Anyway getting to the point, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts...
