Things are getting Funky and I hate it!!

I've been brewing for about ten years now and have not had many problems with sanitation or contaminated batches... Until now. I recently have had a few batches go bad on me. Dumping 10 gallon batches down the drain is the worst! This first happened to me with a couple of Lagers this spring...

    Dying Side Arms

My good buddy has a huge garden with about 18 crowns going. The pic I'm posting isn't great, but you can see the side arms growing about 2 - 3 inches, then drying and shriveling up. My hops at home haven't done anything like this, and the rest of his plants are growing STRONG. What's going on?

    BEST false bottom...

I have been brewing with a "Pico Style" False bottom... I have been relatively happy with it. I like the fact that it supports the false bottom above the bulkhead/dip tube assembly. My efficiency can be inconsistent at times, I am wondering what other false bottoms people SWEAR by. I do like...

Bottling Cider off of a Keg

I recently fermented 15 Gallons of cider in 3 different corny kegs. My idea was to carb them up in the keg and use my beer gun to fill bottles. My thought was this would help me to avoid bottle bombs created by priming the cider with more juice concentrate or priming sugar. My problem was...

    Bohemian Pilsner Malt for IPA's

I know lots of DFH 90 Min clones use this malt. I myself have brewed with it for an IPA as well, but it was years ago. Anyone else use pilsner malt for IPA's often? If so does it work well with many types of hops? Looking to brew an IPA with Warrior for bittering and my homegrown Columbus for...

    Black Swan Honeycomb Barrel Alternative

A buddy of mine gave me one of these to try out. Its a charred stick of wood with holes in it, used for accelerated barrel aging flavor. Has anyone used these? I am wondering how much beer to put this 'stick' in... I was thinking of adding it to a 5 gallon carboy full of Barleywine or Porter...

    Brewing with homegrown hops

I am getting excited to have my first harvest of homegrown hops! looking like I will have at least a couple pounds of Cloumbus hops, and probably a half pound of Glacier hops. I am wondering what to expect from brewing with my own hops. Will I be let down? Totally stoked? I'd like to hear some...

Sight glass on Mash Tun or no sight glass on Mash Tun?

Im currently using 3 keggles. I only put a sight glass on the Liqour Tank and the Boil Kettle thinking there was no need on on my mash tun, and that grains may get in there. Any thoughts? or reasons why I should pop one on there? Cheers! :rockin:

    Too Much CaraPils ??

Yesterday I brewed a recipe from Jamil's "Brewing the Classic Styles" book. It was the Janet's Brown Ale recipe. The recipe called for 1.25 Lbs of CaraPils Dextrinous Malt for a 5.5 gallon batch. I brew 11 gallon batches, and normally wouldn't use more that 1 pound for 11 gallons. I used 2...

    Yeast Farming Question

I am starting to collect yeast for a 'Yeast Bank'. One way I have been collecting strains is by pouring some starter wort into freshly emptied WL vials. I have been dumping the vials out into an appropriate starter, then topping them off with some starter wort and LOOSELY cap or top with foil...

    Great Lakes Hops

Just placed an order for 8 crowns from Great Lakes Hops. I have read previous threads from folks here on HBT, and they seem pretty legit. I live just outside Minneapolis, MN. Any advice from a fellow MN hop grower would be great. :rockin:

    Problems using my Refractometer

I just acquired a refractometer for use in my All-Grain brewing productions. I would really like to utilize this tool for quickly checking the gravity of my runnings, and for Pre & Post boil gravity readings. During my last 3 brew sessions I have had stange results. My pre boil gravity will read...

    Single Tier Buildout Checklist

I am building (slowly) a brewtus 10 single tier system. I have a good start, and my setup is already functional, but completely manual. I would like to build a setup just like the Brewtus 10. This will take me some time to acquire all the parts I need, and I would love it if someone had a 'parts...

Using a Plate Chiller w/ Pellet Hops in the Boil

Will Pellet hops be an issue, or can I run boil straight through my plate chiller without somehow removing the hops from the wort first?
