I use nutrient. I think it helps. However, if I go to make a starter and realize I'm out, I don't worry. DME is good enough for a starter.

Where did you recover the yeast from?
 
I washed the yeast from the leftover yeast/trub at the bottom of my fermentation bucket. YouTube has some good step by step demonstrations on how to do it.
The brew was an IPA with a wye liquid that I want to re-use :) over and over. :)
