Yeast starter for dummys

I recently got the scores back I. My first contest and got dinged pretty bad the guys on here said most of it was yeast related and suggested I start making starters. I have a few questions such as how long will a starter stay good. And how dig should I make one. Basically a simple run down would be great
 
Ive kept starters for up to a week in the fridge. I'm sure there is some loss of cell viability but I cant tell you any numbers on that. As to how big of a starter, it depends on alot of factors: lager/ale, liquid/dry, OG, stirplate or not.
