I'm building a heatstick and don't know jack about electricity.

I've been reading all the threads and instructions..

I see early on a lot of fear over the danger of heatsticks but some of these threads go back years. I'm guessing by now there are thousands of heatsticks a brewin' and I don't see much negative info.

I see some people scorched wort that had a lot of protein (rye) in it and some popped gfi's when trying to plug in two sticks but nothing more.

I totally don't understand how the grounding on these work by sandwiching the ground wire between the metal and plastic extensions but my thought is they must be pretty safe at this point.

What is the worst thing that has happened with heatsticks we know about some few years into being used for home brewing?"

Well, when messing with electricity and water your concerns are electrocution and fire.
