I put it in my first batch but, to help with clarity apparently. But, what is it?
 
It's carrageen, from seaweed. It's basically Irish moss compressed into a tablet. It works to help coagulate proteins, so they don't cause haze in your beer.

my recipe said to use only half of the tablet, is that normal? why not use the whole thing?
