Yeah, that appears to be some sort of Roasted Grain in there.

So what do you think I have on my hands? I'm hoping the store I got the grain from will be able to help me out. I'm just a bit bummed because I was shooting for a super pale, lightly hopped session beer. My initial Yield was 10 gallons at 1.056 when it was supposed to be 1.042 or so. I ended up diluting it down which means more beer in the end but I was really looking forward to a lighter color.

My first thought was that you got dark Munich, instead of the "regular" or light Munich. I think the dark Munich is only like 20L, though! I use it in bocks and schwarzbier.

The couple grains I pulled off the top of the mash were highly Roasted. I'm guessing they were chocolate malt because it didn't seem to have a harsh astringency. In the end, I'm sure the beer will be good, but what if I LOVE it and want to replicate it. haha

So I transferred to secondary to get a better idea of what it looks like after fermentation was complete. I racked onto Gelatin and here it is after a day at 60 degrees. Looks to me like its in the 15-20 range. Definitely not the right grain bill I ordered.

Left side is my Biere De Garde at about 7.5 srm and right side is my 4.5 srm "Pale Ale".
