I've done 3 beers one was suppose to be 1.069 and I ended up 1.
062 batch sparge. My second one was suppose to be 1.056 I got 1.046 no sparge, the 3rd one was suppose to be 1.053 and I ended up with 1.044 fly sparge. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I used t ok hit it right on the money almost all the time. The only thing I've changed for equipment is my mash tun J went from a 5 gl cooler mash tun to a 10 gl cooler mash tun but other than that I'm doing everything like u used to.ewing And I Cant Get My Efficiency Above 65%. Im sure you are not doing anything wrong..Its a new mash tun so its gonna take a few batches to dial in your BHE...I would reccommend splitting the sparge water into 2 and sparge twice...also i recommend stirring the mash more often maybe at the 30 min mark and a nice thorough stir before sparging..also make sure your grist is milled well and im sure you will start hitting your numbers..good luck cheers

First thing you're doing wrong is posting twice in each of 2 threads with confusing grammar... j/k lol :)

Second of all, I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Your new tun has lower efficiency. I would just plan for that for now. It seems like you're consistently low, so compensate with a bigger grain bill.

As far as why your efficiency may have suffered... could be a million different things, but I'm going to assume things like your water/grain ratio and mash temps haven't changed. I would say it has something to do with your new mash tun. If you have a larger false bottom, you may have some water that gets trapped down there and doesn't efficiently extract fermentables? Does it hold temp as good as it did in your old tun?

Sorry for the double post I was using my stupid phone while my 3 and 4 year old were claiming all over me. I just noticed it posted it twice.

No this is new grain...well new to me from my local brew store I am assuming it's not too old. I am using them for the first time so I don't know if the are crushing the grains differently than my other local brew store that I used in the past.

no problem, just giving you a hard time!

I get really ppor efficiency out of my tun as well. I just compensate with a bit steeper grain bill. Works out fine.

Holy crap. I NEVER pick on people for this sortof thing, but that post is not something I am willing to read. Sorry. Gives me a headache.

same thing happened to me when I switched from 5gal. to 10gal. tun. I used to fly sparge now I do full volume mashes and get a solid 70% efficiency so I know how to calculate the grain bill.
