Weird carbonation

I bottled my Burning Pants Pale ale (my pants melted while carrying my keg through the door :-s) on March 16th. 5 days later, I popped a bottle to see how flat it was. Oh surprise, the beer was foaming like if I had previously shook it. I thought that was a very fast carbonation for a change. I tried other bottles since and the beer is now mostly flat. I know I should be patient bt my question is why it was almost over carbonated and now, the carbonation is far from being complete? Where did the CO2 go?
 
The gas had been produced and built up pressure, but is hadn't gone into suspension. Now it is in suspension and it has to build up more pressure.
