Vollrath and Polar Ware have been my "go to" stockpot and kettle manufacturers since I started brewing in the early nineties. I always thought of these two companies as rivals; however, truth be told, both companies were owned by members of the same extended family before Vollrath acquired Polar Ware in 2012.
Vollrath was founded in 1884 by Jacob Vollrath. Polar Ware was founded in 1907 by Andrew Vollrath (Jacob's son). Polar Ware was owned by Jacob's great-great-grandson Walter Vollrath before the merger. The Vollrath family is also related to the Kohler family by marraige (yes, that Kohler family). Terry Kohler owned Vollrath before the merger. Terry is also one of Jacob's great-great-grandsons. How's that for keeping it in the family?
