Shout out for my dad:

US Army Air-Force (yes it used to be part of the Army)
1944 - ? not sure, the story changes

After war ended, went to college and got deferment to go to grad school (Air-Force had just started to be it's own unit and they wanted grad students) but Air-Force didn't need him after school but gave him the promised promotion to Captain without having to go back and serve.

"The Captain" has been living with us for a few years now. His special veterans day dinner request was a hot dog.
