Steeping Brown Malt?

So the other thread on this wasn't very conclusive. I'm planning to brew Jamil's "Who's your Taddy Porter" as extract with steeping grains and it says to steep 1 lb brown malt. Everything else I read, including How to Brew say brown malt needs to be mashed. Will I get the intended effect by steeping?
 
you'll get the flavor ( a sorta rough flavor good in a porter ) and the color out of it, but no abv. it'll be ok. just make sure you age it a little extra, as brown malt needs extra time to blend in
 
Thanks for the response! I wasn't expecting to get any abv so that's fine. Just wanted to make sure I'd get the flavor out of it. I'll let it mellow a bit longer too as you suggest.
