Smelly Hops

OK, I generally love the smell of hops, before and after the boil. I did a brew this weekend using german spalt hops from a very reputable online supplier. The hops smelled "off" right out of the bag and now sitting in the trash they are stinking up the whole garage.

The bag was unopened, vacuum sealed and stored in the frig since I received them. i've used spalt before but did not note any particular smell.

Has anyone else had this problem? Unfortunately I did not taste the wort after boiler before the primary but I only became concerned after the hops sat in the garbage and began to stink.

I did a quick search, and found lots of posts of people commenting on the really bad smell of Splat hops, so it is probably just that hop. Everyone says they smell awful in the boil, but turn out fine in the end beer.
