I am brewing today, so pulled my starter from fridge and recognized a small gnat, I think.
I am wondering if the pH, alcohol creation, and yeast multiplication dominating the population
makes this starter salvageable.

From what little I now, a gnat is like a fruit fly and is bad! I would toss it and pitch dry yeast if available. But on the other hand, It will make beer and likely take a long time for a potential infection to appear if kept cold after fermentation is complete. Sorry, but I can't tell you what you want to hear...that is "oh don't worry, It'll be fine".
