Question about water absorption into grain

If I have 20 pounds of grain and 40 gallons of water, how much liquid can I expect to distract?

2.5 gallons lost to absorption @ 1/2 quart per pound of grain. I always use this formula and it comes out pretty darn close every time.

BIAB or traditional lautering?

Traditional, .12gal/lb (1/2qt/lb) is a good default

BIAB can be as low as ~.08gal/lb

Depends on your volume/batch size. You won't be mashing 20lbs of grain in 40 gallons of water.

I'm not sure, I've never tried to "distract" liquid before.

If you have a false bottom, don't forget to include that dead space.

You would "extract" about 38 gallons of liquid. What that liquid contains would be a function of what kind of grain it was, whether it was malted or not, and what temperature it was held at and for how long. 20 pounds of grain is a rather insignificant amount for 40 gallons of water. A rough rule of thumb is that you can get about 25 PPG so 20 x 25 is 500 divided by 40 gallons is 1.012 SG.
