In real world terms though, fuggetaboutit! Keep your hops watered and they will try to take over the world! Or at least, the part of it they can climb!

It's a plant. These things happen to plants. They deal with it and get on with the business at hand. Growth!

They will start a new leader (or 2) from one of the lower nodes and continue up the rope. May also encourage new shoots from the crown.
 
I'm more than sure it was no bird. Birds are good, they eat bugs that eat hops. I would check your plants for small caterpillars or moth larvae. Good luck
