I only recently started using 1 gallon carboys so I could do more experimenting making 1 gallon mead batches. I primary in 2 gallon buckets and then transfer into 1 gallon glass carboys for secondary/clearing. I bought #6 stoppers for them as every where I could see, it seems that is what most people are using. For the life of me, these things do not seem ideal. When wet (which they always are when inserting because they are coming straight out of sanitizer solutions) they will not seal. No matter how far you push them down into the carboy, they just work themselves back up. While the weight of the airlock on top of it should hold it down sufficiently, this seems less than ideal to me. I've also used the normal stoppers I use for my 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5 carboys, (not sure on the size of them but they work just fine), I've really got to jam the $hi% out of them to get them into the 1 gallon. I have no doubt that I'm going to split a carboy neck putting one of these in and give new meaning to my"blood orange" mead. Anybody else having this problem?
Maybe they aren't standardized? Not sure what the number is in reference to actually, the diameter at the top? If I had stoppers with the same top diameter but were a 1/2" longer and a bit less tapered, I'd be in business.
