So I pulled a jar of yeast (Wyeast 1469) out of the back of the fridge to discover that it was partially frozen. We recent moved and I didn't realize the new refrigerator would get that cold in the back. I was planning to use this to make a starter later today. Any thoughts? It looks like the mainly frozen part is the liquid and not the yeast.

I think you should be good to go. Your starter will confirm that though. :)

I freeze my yeast, but I use a 15% Glycerine solution as an antifreeze and haven't had any issues. Sometimes they are a bit slow to start, but usually ready to go in 36 hours max.

Since the ice isn't really on the yeast, I think you will be just fine, or marginally impacted by the partial freeze.

I had a WLP029 slurry do the same thing you are showing. Thawed room temp, made a starter and it took off like a rocket when pitched.

Thanks for the advice. Ate through the starter just fine.
