I do the same thing, add little gizmos here and there to the brewery just because I can....

That's a pretty cool thing to do actually. I don't know how necessary, but then again, how necessary is some of the things we do in life? I say go with it if you can!
 
I did this too with the same float switch (McMaster-Carr?)

My fill valve is manual so I ran this switch to an alarm on the PLC to give me advanced warning before water starts pouring over the top of my HLT. Yes, before I added the switch I actually did this and drenched my pump motors. Made a big mess, but luckily the motors still work.
