I just "acquired" a keg from a buddy and plan to use it for my mash tun instead of the cooler. After taking a look at it, I noticed there is a layer of insulation around it from the brewery. Some kind of black rubberized insulation. No doubt it's for keeping it colder for longer. Anyone out there have one of these? I am wondering how well it will work to hold hotter temperatures.

Cheers

I use a rubber coated keg for my MT and BK, Electric Brutus 20. I think it's great and adds a little insulation to the mash, but not much. I use a HERMS to maintain temps. The BK gets a little warm to the touch during a boil but not bad, less than a fresh cup of coffee.

If you haven't cut anything think about going bottom drain on the MT. I love it and all you need is a 2" triclover and you are good to go.

Give it a cool paint job and spice up the rig. Good luck.
