I'm pretty new to homebrew and I'm not very familiar yet with the different styles of beer.. anyway, I want to soak some oak chips in bourbon to achieve that awesome barrel aged taste, but I want to know what the perfect base ale for this would be.... any input?

Generally speaking, barrel-aged ales are big beers; think barleywine, imperial stout, old ales, and the like.

I believe that you can approximate a barrel-aged beer using bourbon soaked wood chips but you'll likely never reach a that perfect barrel-aged flavor without actually barrel aging.

I would suggest you do just do more reading on these forums and around other parts of the internet on barrel-aged beers and get a better handle on the process and styles.
