I live in Michigan and would love to start growing my own hops. Any idea what grows well here? Or does that not really matter?

First, welcome. Second, check out the sticky's they will help. Third, if you want to plant rhizomes you won't be able to find any until Spring. If you are interested in crowns there is a place in Michigan that is selling them now (Great Lake Hops).

Space depends on how many of each plant you want. You want to keep 6ft or so between varieties. Michigan does pretty well with most varieties of hops but the website I mentioned above has that in their description.
