I thought I was well versed on this matter, but no one can be prepared for an eruption like I had. I've read where this can happen. But not to me! I'm always careful when I take my sanitized dip tube or spoon and give my must a gentle swirl. Especially before and after nutrient additions. But, now I have a new lees stirrer. Yee haw! It worked like a charm when mixing the honey into the must yesterday before pitch and nutrients. But today... Mt. St. Helens!!! Guess I went a little to fast with my drill. Lost a quart or two of my Cherry/Vanilla Melomel before I knew what hit me. Good thing I had no fruit in there yet. You guys should have warned me... :D:D:D

Yikes, sorry to hear it hit your cherry/vanilla mead specifically. I really wish I could join the group, but its not looking good. Keep us updated on its return to health after this hellish nightmare of an explosion.

Yea, I get a lot of foam doing an SNA, but I always use a bucket for my mead primaries. For me its just easier to work with than a carboy.
I am deeply sorry for your loss of Cherry/Vanilla Melomel, it will certainly be missed.
