This is my second batch using a starter. I mixed up DME to make a 1.040 starter 24 hours before I pitched it into 6 gallons of 1.072 (Porter). This is 24 hours later. Is this normal? I have yet to have a blow off tube overflow a 32oz cup half filled with water. I moved it over to a gallon jug to prevent a mess in my closet.

Thanks for your input.

Most ale yeasts perform best, without ester production, at about 66°. You could expect another 3° to 5° temperature increase. Setting the fermentor in water will absorb some of the increase.
Which yeast are you using?
