Had some time to kill, an abundance of Chromebooks figured why not give this a shot. It's fairly easy to do.

I will wipe it all and start over and attempt BeerSmith 2.3 next.
If you want Beersmith 2.3 click here https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=628642

The steps are very similar but for BeerSmith 2.3 you have to install a newer version on Ubuntu.

Install Linux and BeerSmith 2.2 on Chromebook.

1. Enable Developer mode on Chromebook

Thanks, not a computer guy. Does this mean my computer will not work like Chromebook any more?

This line bothers me,
WARNING: Enabling (and Disabling) Developer Mode Will Wipe Your Chromebook, Google Does NOT Offer Support For Developer Mode, Developer Mode will leave you vulnerable to attacks.

It will still work like a chrome book. Once you start the Linux/Ubuntu (step 7) you can swap between Chrome OS and Linux/Ubuntu (step 8).

Developer Mode allows the user to have access to permissions not available in the regular mode of Chrome OS. When you enable Developer Mode, you turn off some of the security features of Chrome OS - so yes it is less secure. Developer Mode exists for those that need deeper access to the operating system. You are on your own when you put your system in Developer Mode.

If you run into a problem the first thing that a support person will have you do is to take your system out of Dev Mode which will erase all of the locally stored data and refresh Chrome OS back to its default (non-Dev Mode) state. It's possible to get yourself into trouble in Dev Mode (for example you can inadvertently alter the operating system or file system in a negative way - there aren't any "safety rails" when you're in Dev Mode.)

Many folks have used their Chromebooks in Dev Mode successfully, but you are leaving behind many of the assurances of regular-mode Chrome OS when you do so. If you get lost you can take the Chromebook out of Dev Mode, but you could potentially need to go so far as needing to install Chrome OS from USB to get things back to normal.

When you boot in Dev Mode there is a warning that displays for 30 seconds to remind the user of the possible dangers. Say goodbye to those ultra-fast Chrome OS boot times.

Chrome OS also has Channels, which are distinct from the Mode.
The default channel is Stable, which is the most thoroughly tested version of Chrome OS. This is the channel that most users should use, especially those who need the highest assurance of things just working the way they are supposed to.
The Beta Channel is where features that are coming soon to the Stable release of Chrome OS are tested. Issues and bugs are sometimes found on this channel, but they are rarely severe.
Dev Channel is for the adventurous. Experimental features that may not make it to the Stable release soon or may never be released are tested here. Since this channel is more experimental, it isn't meant for users that demand the highest levels of stability. Expect to experience some bugs on this release, and some of them could be significant.
Every time you change the Mode or roll back the Channel your system will wipe all local data from the Chromebook.

You can change the Mode or Channel any time you like.

It will still work like a chrome book. Once you start the Linux/Ubuntu (step 7) you can swap between Chrome OS and Linux/Ubuntu (step 8).

Developer Mode allows the user to have access to permissions not available in the regular mode of Chrome OS. .......

Thanks, lots to digest but me thinks this is out of my league. My son is web security guy, I'll bounce it off of him.

Just a suggestion but I would love the Warning to the very beginning. Idiots like me don't read thoroughly enough and just dive right in. I didn't see the warning until the system was already moving to developer mode and I lost some important files. Nothing I can't get back but it'll just be a pain.

Otherwise, you did a great job laying this out in a way that even a less savvy computer guy could understand and follow.

Hello,

I can't seem to get past part 5 on this list. When I get to the bash shell and put in the command from part 5, I get a message that says sh: 0: Can't open –e. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
