Currently looking at this flask for starters and was wondering if I should be worried about the crack shown in the picture.

I don't have the item yet so I can't tell you what exactly it looks like in person

I personally wouldn't buy it, if you ever plan on heating your starter wort in it. Heating it on a stove could easily cause it to crack more.

Don't plan on boiling in it....it's a steal for $15 so I may get it (was listed as a vase for holding flowers lol)

You mention that it was used as a vase for holding flowers. I would also be concerned about any residue from fertilizer used prior for flowers. Keep this in mind and take the extra time to clean it well. If you don't intend on heating it, it may work fine for you. Cheers!

I will do this as it looks pretty dusty anyways and I think I will buy it...seems high enough up that I don't think I will have an effect on it

I hope the crack is only on the outside too...I can dream can't I?

Dude, it's a piece of junk. It's going to break on you sooner or later. And it will likely harbor bacteria in the meantime. Just get a different one.

Lol it's not a deal. It's broke. It'll last you a minute, then it won't be a deal. Pay $30 and get a new one that'll last.

I work in a hobby store. Every day guys bring in their broken trains and tell me about the "great deal" they got on the derelict item in question. I show them a new item priced below, at, or very near the price they paid for their "bargain". Some days I don't know whether to laugh or cry. It's like a badge of honor that one can say "I never got rooked buying new goods with warranties from overpriced dealers!"

This post gave me chuckle.

The cheap flasks are not suitable for direct heating applications! The lab grade stuff is, but is very expensive! As to the crack in that glass, I +1 the general consensus that it would not be a good idea to use it.

In general I say BREW... AND DON'T DO CRACK NO MATTER HOW GOOD IT IS.

Wouldn't use it. Forgetting about the crack, who knows what's been in it. Mercury, lead, viagra, who knows.....

$30 for a 5 liter flask? Where?

It's broken. Even if free I would not mess with it. Glass slivers HURT!!! Or worse. Again to mention what others have said: If used for flowers pesticides HAVE been in that flask!

Save your money. Don't use it even if you get it free.

If youcan find me a $15 brand new 5 liter flask I'm all ears

It's that shipping that kills...my LHBS has them for $55

Not worth it. I personally would be embarrassed to ask anybody to buy this from me. Just curious though, are you planning on using it on a stir plate? The flat bottom of a flask is the only advantage for that. If you're just doing starters by the shake and swirl method any old glass jug will do the trick. EDIT: one that has only been used for food grade.

Yes sir plate

Okay, then I understand why you want a flask. But honestly pay the extra $15 and cost of shipping for a brand new one. I believe there is a link above. Buy the flawed one and the crack is eventually going to fail the flask at just the wrong moment and you'll be kicking yourself in the arse for going cheap.

Morebeer has them for just under $40 eligible for free shipping

I sure some searching you can find it with decent shipping. I'm not sure what those sites charge for shipping.

It's still better to pay a few extra bucks for new vs buying that one then having to re buy another one. That other one will not last. But if your I feel it's worth the risk, do it.

But I guessing if you really did think it was a bargain, you would've bought it and not posted this :)

$15 for a cracked flask = not a bargain at all. In the end, it will be a waste of $15.

500ml is quite small. I would not go less than 2000ml for the ability to do a decent size starter. Unless you already have larger flasks. I wouldn't buy the cracked one for any reason. It will eventually break when it is being held.

5000 mL = .5 L

Negative.... Google 5000 ml

look at the picture..... The thing is literally bigger than a gallon of milk..... Huge......

If you don't heat sanitize, you're fine. It won't "harbor nasties" if you do even a halfassed job of sanitizing.

That said, if you don't need it for a stir plate or something, dang, get a 1 gallon carboy. They cost nothing. Or rather, as much as a gallon of cider. Plus you get some cider. Realistically you can probably get a good stir going in one of those, too. I swear half the appeal of the flasks is looking like a mad scientist.

I love metric because standard english measurements are a pain. cups, quarts, gallons, fractions thereof.

Milli is a prefix that denotes one thousandth part of, so 1000 milliliters would equal 1 liter

5000 ml is Five liters.

u sure that's a crack, as in the item is listed as such (with a crack)?
the cord from the blinds is pulled down, laying on (i could guess) the windowsill. this looks like a reflection of the white cord behind the flask.

Doubt it's a reflection, but it could be a flaw in the glass. I had a 12 gallon pyrex carboy that had some bubbles in the glass. Some looked kinda like cracks, but they didn't affect the piece.

I'd assume the original post for the ad stated it was a crack if it is.

Plus that second photo with the ruler puts the damage in perspective.
