Family and I hit up the local pizza joint last night. My eyes perked up when I saw a sign at the hostess desk that said "Zombie Dust here". Sweet, never had it before. Once we finally got seated, peeked at the beer menu and saw it was $12. That has to be for a bomber, I thought. Nope. 12 oz bottle was $12.

We passed on it. The wife had a couple of Toppling Goliath's Golden Nuggets for $5 a piece and I tried out some local APAs for $5 a piece. Still wondering if I should have splurged.

ouch...yeah, I dunno about $12 unless it's an aged sour or some other specialty Belgian.
heck, I went to ballast point the other day and got a 4oz taster of the 8 year barrel aged commodore stout for $2. now that's a place I will readily go back to!!
however, conventional business wisdom says that price is whatever people are willing to pay. if they're selling them to SOMEBODY at that price then good for them.

I'd say definitely not. It's good but really not special in any way. I remember having it on tap at a bar with ~100 taps in West Lafayette Indiana quite a few years ago before it was hugely popular and distinctly remember there being other IPA options on tap that were better.

I see a lot of folks here brewing Zombie Dust clones. Never seen it in my state store's limited selection. Doesn't appear superlative by the numbers - is it just a really well balanced Citra IPA? I remember liking the Heady Topper (I remember before The Alchemist actually brewed beer and was just a gastropub), but feeling that the hype was a bit overblown. Is this the same thing?

This reminds me of when it cost $500 to play Pebble Beach. I never have but my brother did, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what would make it worth that. The joke was always that they had better have something special waiting for a golfer behind the 13th green if it was to be worth that much money.

Let me help you with that.

I would never pay more than three to four dollars for zombie dust, but that is one of the advantages of living in northern Indiana I can get the stuff pretty easily.
I frequent a bar that has ~10 taps dedicated to 3F and rarely order any of their stuff.
I would love to get my hands on some RR or Alchemist stuff though.:(

I guess that is one of the bad things living 7 miles from 3 Floyd's. Only having to pay $5/ pint. Just had one this afternoon as a matter of fact. But then again, getting our hands on Cigar City or Russian River stuff is near impossible. The closer you are to one, the further away from others.

A friend of mine paid $95 for a 50 cL bottle of Cantillon Lou Pepe. Sadly that's a bit too rich for my taste, although I have paid upwards of $15 for something remarkable. I was fortunate to enjoy some fantastic beer this week and the priciest was a $13 eisbock worth every penny.

I would have no problem if it was a beer I really wanted to try. Heck at a ball game a Coors Light can cost $10.

A few weeks ago I paid $15 for Brewdog Tokyo (18.2% ABV Stout), and $10 each for Dogfish Head Fort and Higher math. I don't mind (all 12 oz bottles). Whenever I go to Cleveland Indians games I usually spend $9 or so on a can of genesee (16oz but still).

Thats "two" too many. Fix your grammar dude. But ZD shouldn't cost that much. Alas

Heck, last time I was at a CASINO in Indiana they had ZD, and I didn't even pay half of what the OP was being charged haha. 3F should be notified if a restaurant is charging $12 for a 12 oz ZD. Just greedy..

I followed it up with a 1oz pour of Bourbon for $15. Also worth it.

Sorry I couldn't make life easier for you on the HBT fantasy football league. Losing by .12 points sucks! I might take that one to my grave. On the plus side, I guess that means I don't have to drink the ZumBier I was likely to get from you :p

At $12/bottle I'm going to bet it is pretty old. Fifty fifty brewing beer sells for $28/22oz so it's more expensive than the ZD you saw. I had their vanilla Porter and it was amazing.

I doubt if they would do anything. The folks at 3F are notorious a$$holes

Not really, in my opinion. Last time I went I bought a case of gumball head that tasted off. I emailed them and they shipped me a whole new case the same day, and let me keep the old...I have had nothing but good experiences with them every time.

Sad thing is, around here, $12 for a 12 oz pour isn't uncommon around here. Craft beers are regularly $8-10 per pint/bottle. Rarer/sought after ones are usually more. Whenever it's something brought in for a DC grey market special event (DC's laws allow grey market sales by licensed retailers whenever there isn't already a licensed distributor bringing it into the district, as a result things like Russian River and Hill Farmstead will show up at bottle shops and beer bars from time to time at HUGE markups). I got fresh Pliny the Elder for something like $15 for a 10 oz pour. Overpriced for sure but tasty enough. Zwanze Day always has various Cantillon beers for slightly more than that. When you venture into sours, it can get insane. I don't scoff at spending $50 for a 750 of Cantillon or Drei Fonteinen. I've seen some more obscure European imports and other extreme rarities for for more than $100 a bottle at beer bars.

Zombie Dust to me is like Pliny. I haven't had it mind you, but the idea is something that locals can get easily and cheaply, but everyone who's not a local wants. If you can find a local not trying to cash in on the "whale" status and trade at cost, you can get it for a reasonable value.

Well that's pretty awesome. They have a terrible reputation in the brewing industry and I have had nothing but bad experiences with them. Same goes for my friends who supply them. Perhaps they realized that and are turning over a new leaf. I love their beer, I just wish they weren't such pr!cks with the whole "you aren't cool enough to drink my beer" attitude. Life is too short for that man

I once paid $12 for a crooked stave vieillein La Jolla. I had it once prior and loved it, and i really wanted my wife to try it. I did not enjoy my 11.2 oz, $12 pour because I was obsessing over making it last.

A local bar actually has a $95 beer on their bottle list. Check out the bottle list. There are a ton of $20+ bottles. http://www.churchkeydc.com/documents/BBCKBOTTLELIST12-31-2015.pdf

I agree. Hopefully you have better experiences in the future! I only have one complaint. I have traveled there 3 or 4 times now, and every time I wanted to grab a tour they ended up cancelling it last minute.

ChurchKey is one of the beer bars of which I speak. I don't go in there unless I plan on spending a ridiculous sum, but they have some excellent beers available.

I've never tried to tour there, I didn't even know they offered it. Fun story though, first time I ever went there I got a burger that gave me the most prolific sh!ts I've ever experienced. I poop a lot too. That's not a knock on the brewery, just a delightful anecdote I thought I'd share. The to-go guy is pretty awesome, but he's the only person I've ever liked that works there

Yeah, $12 is about twice what it should be costing. It's a good beer, but I've had plenty that are better. Pretty sure I'd rather spend that money on two Orvals, but that's just my taste :mug:

Hell no.

Anything that expensive will have low turnover, anything with low turnover has a good chance of being old. Old IPAs suck. Now for a RIS I might be tempted.

Funny you should mention that...

I was in a bottle shop a few months ago and found some very old beers -- various 2006-2009 IPAs from Stone, Lagunitas and Harpoon retailing for upwards of $15 a bottle. Trying to be helpful, I notified the owner that he had vast quantities of expired beer polluting his shelf space. His response?

"No, people will keep those beers for years."

Never returned to patronize his shop again.

I've pretty much given up on the high $ brews. Other than being able to say "I've had it," most times I walk away overcharged and disappointed. Very rarely do I find a $$ beer that's actually worth the hype...and high $$. Especially on some of these IPA's.

Dammit I hope I don't find a 3f in a local liquor store...I'd probably fork over the $$
