How important is darkness during primary, secondary, and bottling?

I am noticing more and more where people has blankets, etc around fermenters and I am wondering if this has something to do with darkness being ideal for fermentation.
 
Light in general is bad for beer, thats why we use brown bottles. Not much to do with fermentation other than protecting the beer from light since it is in a clear carboy.
