How do yo fix chipped glassware?

I have a favorite snifter that has a small chip out of the base. How can I grind it smooth or buff it out? I assume some very fine wet sandpaper might do it but how would I polish it smooth? I love the glass but find it annoying every time I use it I have to avoid holding it by that side of the base.
