I've got something between a hoppy American Wheat and a White IPA that I'd like to enter into an upcoming competition and was wondering what the BJCP category gurus thought would be the best place for it. The recipe for a 4 gallon batch was:
2-row 5.5 lb (58%)
Flaked Wheat 2.0 lb (21%)
Wheat Malt 1.5 lb (16%)
Flaked Barley 6 oz (4%)
Flaked Oats 2 oz (1%)
Mash 149 for 60 mins
WLP051 California Ale V Yeast
Galena (Pellet-13.9%) 0.25 oz 60 min
Galena (Pellet-13.9%) 0.5 oz 30 min
Centennial (Pellet-8.7%) 0.5 oz 15 min
Centennial (Pellet-8.7%) 0.5 oz 5 min
Citra (US) (Leaf-13.7%) 1.0 oz Dry Hop
Simcoe (Leaf-13.0%) 1.0 oz Dry Hop
The stats come out to:
OG: 1.059
FG: Have to check notes...
IBU: 49
I'm thinking it's a bit too big and hoppy to be classified as an American Wheat and might need to go into the specialty section, but it doesn't seem too far past something like gumballhead and it's at the very low end of IPA strength/bitterness, so I was wondering what people thought for categorizing this.
