Making an IPA this weekend with some friends - they have never brewed before and the batch will be dedicated (in part) to the birth day of one of them. They are just starting to appreciate IPA's

Slightly heavy grain bill but not too much.
7 lb Golden Promise
7 lb 2-row
1 lb 40L

Desire is to make a flavorful but not too firmly bitter offering (lots of hops and not a lot of IBU's)

I have:

3 oz Citra
8 oz Chinook
8 oz Cascade

Will be using Safale US-05

Batch is 5.75 gal

I need help from the hop-schedule experts out there.

What would you do?

In with the first WAY to much crystal malt comment :)

What's your anticipated OG? I'm guessing something like 1.067?

I'd target ~67 IBU's

Use the Chinook to get about 1/3 of your IBU's as a 60 Minute addition.

Make up the rest of your IBU's with 15 minute additions of all 3 hops.

Then do a 30 minute whirlpool with 1 oz each @ 170º

Dry hop with an ounce of all 3 hops.

Should be tasty with a mild bitter and tons of hop flavor / aroma.

I would do .5oz Chinook @ 60
3oz Cascade @ 5
1.5oz Citra and Cascade @ 0 - HopStand 20-30min @ 165º
1.5oz Citra and Cascade DRYHOP 5 days.

Lots of hop flavor - not so bitter...

Cheers! :mug:

Going slightly higher on the ABV is intentional.

I did break the 5% barrier a bit. Drop to 1/2 lb?

I like the schedules. Both are intriguing. Now to muse over them.

Yes, drop the Crystal to .5lb or less, or just use something else, like Carapils or a touch of Munich... Just what I'd do. I cant stand the darker crystal in an IPA. Just conflicts with the fruity hops... This is just my opinion though. YMMV

I think this is where I will go with this one. Both schedules had something I liked. Decided to merge them

Putting both ideas together
0.5 oz Chinook FWH
2.0 oz Cascade @ 5

Hop Stand (30 min @ 165)
1.5 oz Citra
1.0 oz Chinook
1.0 oz Cascade

Dry Hop – 5 days
1.5 oz Citra
1.0 oz Chinook
1.0 oz Cascade

Drop ½ lb crystal for ½ lb Carapils

Looking at the hops, won't the Citra bury the Cascade at those amounts with 2x AA%?

This past weekend, I brewed a simple IPA.
5 gal BIAB
11 lbs 2 row
2lbs Vienna
1lb Corn sugar

Magnum - 1oz @ FWH
Citra - 1 oz @ 5min, 1oz at FO, 1 oz WP below 175f
Cascade - 2oz @5min, 2oz at FO, 2 oz WP below 175f

And for this, I tried a hop balancing techniques I have seen here - simplified for easy math:
Citra = 12% AA
Cascade = 6% AA
So, 2oz of Cascade for every 1oz Citra.

Not sure about all of the scientific mumbo-jumbo...or if this is even appropriate use of the principle for the late hop additions ...but it felt right!:D

I will see in a few weeks.

Maybe someone will chime in with more info on balance.

To me - the Cascade will be background, but compliment the Citra and Chinook. No need to be able to pick out each hop. I have used these three in combination before and they definitely compliment and make something better than any single one on its own.
