That article has some really weird positions about growing ground cherries. They aren't hard to grow and grow really well outside of a lot of major fruit growing areas. The biggest reason why they never hit commercial production is because the fruit isn't ripe until it falls off the plant and then needs another week or so to continue ripening. It's hard to harvest mechanically as a result. The plants drop fruit continuously through the growing season so you have to collect every few days. I don't know if gene editing can change those functions of the plant.
