I've heard that in ancient times beer was sometimes fermented by adding grapes since the film on the skin is yeast. I've been interested in trying a modern experiment with this practice. Has anybody else tried it?

That sounds like a fun experiment but don't be surprised if you beer turns out undrinkable (by our standards). I'd suggest you try several small batches and save the yeast cake from any that taste good as you can use that to ferment a larger batch.

Good idea on keeping the slurry. I'll only do 1 gallon batches anyway until I decide if I can make anything worth drinking out of it. If I try it, I'll post my results here. Now to decide what base I should use. I'm thinking something bready.
