So I usually use 1.5qts/lb water grain ratio. I got to thinking the other day that if the grains absorb .125 per pound, should I add that extra water to my water to grain ratio? Or, is that ratio already taking into account the absorption?
Just a ponder.

The mash thickness is fine- that's where the enzymes do their work. The pH must be in range, too, so you want the mash thickness to be in the optimum range. Usually 1-2 quarts per pound of grain is fine for enzymatic action.

Absorption really doesn't come into play here, you just don't get out what you put in because of it.

I mash at 1.25 qt/lb and calculate my absorbtion. Then I know about what I'll get for my first runnings. Then take your final desired volume and subtract your 1st runnings to get your total sparge amount.
