I'll be starting a porter later this week (hopefully Thursday). I just read something about first wort hopping, which naturally sounds like a great match for something like an IPA. Would this be an appropriate technique for a porter? I love hops (and really don't care what other people think).

Well, personally, I don't pick up a lot of the flavor that people associate with FWH (beyond what little flavor normal bittering imparts), so I think it would be perfectly acceptable. However, my process is a little different so I don't really FWH in the traditional way (add to first runnings and leave them there through the sparge and boil).

The softer bitterness you get could be nice with the bitterness you get from the dark grains.
