I recently just finished my first attempt at beer. I was wondering if large amounts of water loss during the boil is common. I boiled 2.5 gallons of water but after the boil I had to add the other .5 gallon and 84 ounces to get back to the 2.5 gallons. It's around 1.2 gallons of loss.

Here is my recipe I used.

1/4 lbs Crystal 60l
1/4 lbs biscuit
1/4 lbs special roast
1/8 lbs chocolate

3lbs amber DME

1/2 oz Perle
1/4 oz Williamette
1/4 oz Williamette

It varies on kettle/pot dimensions and how hard you're boiling, but yeah, that sounds about right. My kettle+boil tends to lose 1 gallon per hour of boiling. As long as it is consistent you can predict and plan for it at least! :)

Boil 2 gallons of plain water for an hour. Measure what's left over and subtract it from 2 gallons (256 oz) to get your boil-off rate. This ia a constant, regardless of your batch size. If your kettle is big enough, add this amount to your boil so you'll be doing full-boils.
