Its a bit confusing because you have the option to split out the mash and the sparge water. Having said that, in my experience, its even more important to treat the sparge. I got involved with water treatment when, on a whim I used RO for the sparge and got a reduction in astringency that I didnt even know I had. Brewers friend has a calculator that does mash pH and also acid addition to get the sparge to pH 5.4. http://www.brewersfriend.com/mash-chemistry-and-brewing-water-calculator/
