The question really has to do with the mail. I am stationed overseas and am looking to get brew more than just cider. I was wondering if the extract's would make it out here. i know most of them you ar suppose to refrigerate to perserve the quality.... what can i do?? mail take from 1 -4 weeks.

What exactly are you worried about?

If you're worried about delivery times, malt extract (liquid and powdered) are already capable of traveling.. Especially since any of the ones from England or Belgium have already travelled a long ways in the belly of a ship to reach the US :) Granted, it's good to avoid high temps, but it won't be the end of the world if you store it at room temp.

If you're worried about yeast, go for dried yeast instead of liquid. Or maybe even use the yeast that comes with the LME kits you can buy. I've had good results using the yeast packets that come with Munton's kits.

Hops are, of course, a different story.. Exposing hops to higher temps for long periods of time damages them. So you might consider hop pellets, or even hop extracts to brew your beer.

okay that was what i was wondering. I had some guy from a LHBS tell me that extract cannot survive the trip.

I already have started using dry yeast for the cider i have been brewing. I have yet to brew beer out here yet.

Thanks for the info.

I probably should have asked this first, but might I enquire where you are located?

There are TONS of homebrew shops (online) in Europe.. (Ich wohne hier in Europa.)

Try this one : http://www.brouwland.com/ which is located in Belgium and has a site in English. A fellow brewer who lives in Switzerland recommends them, but says to make large orders as shipping can be expensive.

I wouldn't worry about the temperatures for LME or DME, especially for Euro delivery. I think your LHBS is speaking out their fermentation lock (especially considering the 18° C temps we are currently experiencing with this system coming up from Africa)

There are also tons of them in Germany, and 3 that I know of in Switzerland (if you speak German, but with the Euro to CHF exchange rate, it may be cheaper in Switzerland.. PLUS they have hops too :) here are the URLs : http://www.heimbrauer.ch http://www.sios.ch and http://www.bier-von-dir.ch/ ) and a lot of them in the UK (although these tend to be rather expensive).

Here also is an online homebrew shop (?) in Italy : http://www.roybeer.it/Shop/prezzi_hb.htm At least I think it is as I can't read Italian perfectly..

Cheers,
Awfers
