Just wondering if folks do a late extract addition with dry extract? If so, is it the same procedure as LME: 1/3 at 60 minute the rest at flame-out?

For context, I'm brewing Midwest Supplies Blonde Ale kit which contains 100% DME (3lb Wheat, 2lbs Extra Light).

Yes, that would be fine. I'd probably use 2 pounds at the beginning, more or less, just because that might be how much is in one bag and I normally like about 1 pound or so of extract per gallon in the boil.

How does this affect hop utilization? I have ran a recipe through brewers friend changing all but 2lbs of the dme to late addition and the IBUs jump by almost 50%, is this calculation accurate?

Not really. But calculators do that, as they default to using wort gravity as a tool for IBU calculations. I'd treat it as a full boil and put in 5 gallons for the "boil volume" as a work around and not change it to late extract addition on the software.

Listen to Yooper, she's the **** when it comes to brewing. I asked the same question a long ways back and got the same answer. And ever since I do a pounds or slightly less per gallon and the rest at flameout. Finding that it helps maintain the color of what the brew should be

Ended up doing as Yooper said. Obviously I haven't tasted or even seen it yet but experimenting like this is what home brewing is all about!

Previously, I'd done half LME at 60min and the rest at 15 minutes. I'm hoping waiting until flame out will improve both color and flavor.

I agree about the calculators. BS2 seems to be just as bad with IBU calculations in the same way described. What it says about bittering IBU's to be precise. 1oz can't be making at or near 100 IBU's. I've been tweaking my equipment, the boil, etc trying to get the software to reflect reality. Not easy...

Best ibu calculator I have found is actually a free one on the Android market. The app is called Brew R and is amazing at calculating late/flamout extract additions
