Made a starter this weekend and forgot to pitch before going to bed - it took too long to cool. I left it covered except a small hole near the thermometer I left in it. Woke up the next morning and pitched some 3711 I washed from another batch. I didn't look before I pitched it, but noticed some strange-looking grey ish clumps near the bottom of my flask while I was aerating. I've left it to sit and it is fermenting out fairly well. I don't detect any off smells.

If this were a 5gal batch I would doubtless make a new starter. However, this is going in a 2gal test batch, so I'm less inclined to buy new yeast as it would double my cost for the batch. Beyond looking for off smells and flavors, is there anything I can do that would help me detect whether this yeast is ruined?
