I have 2nd year Columbus and Centennial planted way too close together -about 16" apart in a small planter (in ground).
Last year I got a decent harvest of both, with the Columbus doing the best.
This year the Centennial grew great bines and leaves but produced not 1 burr or cone. The Columbus went nuts and I got many many cones and even some golf ball sized cones from it.
I know they are way to close together. Is the spacing requirement solely due to one cultivar out-competing the next, (as in my case), or are there other issues as well? I do have plans to move them but I still want to learn.
Thanks to all for sharing your combined knowledge. This site absolutely rocks!
Edit: I'm in the hot dry Sacramento area if that makes any difference.
