Can anyone tell me how far they are transferring beer from kettle to fermenter w/ a Chugger pump and if there are any issues transferring over a distance of 25-30 ft.
I brew outside and need to pump into my garage,I have 2 chugger pumps that are not mounted to a stand so I could potentially use both in line (pre and post chiller )which I would guess would get me there w/ 1/2 I.D. hose,Any input as to how far people are transferring w/ a single pump?
Any advice is appreciated.

Which pump do you have? Chugger has capacity charts published on thier web page. The CPPS-IN-1 curve is shown below. Pressure drop per length of pipe can be estimated from numerous sources. I used http://pressureconnections.com/customer/prcoco/customerpages/literature/Hose_Pressure_Drop_Chart.pdf as an estimated.

  • Conservatively assuming 8gpm flow rate.
  • Pressure drop per 10ft of hose is 10psi or 4.33' head
  • total pressure drop over 30' is ~13' head
  • per pump curve pump will not flow 8gpm at 13' head back pressure

  • Drop to 4gpm
  • Pressure drop per 10ft of hose is 3psi or 1.3' head
  • total pressure drop over 30' is ~4' head
  • per pump curve pump will flow 4gpm at 4' head back pressure
  • pressure drop from any fittings and static height changes and height of beer in the receiving vessel must be added. Depending on the type of quick disconnect used pressure drop may be high.
