Sorry if this is just ignorant, but what is the difference between a baltic porter and an imperial stout? Is this a stout vs. porter argument?

They have common roots but are really pretty different at this point. The porter is drier/more attenuated and cleaner, with as much as a third less IBUs. Think of an Imperial cross between a brown porter and a schwartzbier and you get some idea of a Baltic Porter. Lager fermentation, none or few of the really dark malts and lacking in that burnt character of RIS. It should be an easy drinking beer, even if it is strong.
