I thought this cheat sheet might be helpful for beginners trying to get a handle on all of the added/subtracted volumes that occur in all-grain brewing. Green items are additions, red ones are losses. Time progresses from top to bottom. I hope it's self-explanatory!

+Water for Mashing
+Water for Sparging (optional, your process)
yields --> Fermenter Volume (Batch Size)
----------------------------------------
+Water for Mashing
+Water for Sparging (optional, your process)
- Grain Absorption Loss (0.06-0.12 gal/lb) water permanently absorbed by the grist
- Mash Tun Loss (your equipment, can be zero) wort not recovered from the mash tun
- Evaporation Loss (varies) water boiled off as steam
- Cooling Loss (4%) shrinkage of the liquid as it cools from boiling to room temperature
- Hop Absorption Loss (0.03-0.09 gal/oz) wort permanently absorbed by hop pellets or cones
- Kettle Loss (your equipment, can be zero) wort not recovered from the kettle
yields --> Fermenter Volume (Batch Size)
- Racking/Trub Loss (varies) beer and sediment removed or left behind during fermentation
