I thought this cheat sheet might be helpful for beginners trying to get a handle on all of the added/subtracted volumes that occur in all-grain brewing. Green items are additions, red ones are losses. Time progresses from top to bottom. I hope it's self-explanatory!
----------------------------------------

+Water for Mashing
+Water for Sparging (optional, your process)

  • Grain Absorption Loss (0.06-0.12 gal/lb) – water permanently absorbed by the grist
  • Mash Tun Loss (your equipment, can be zero) – wort not recovered from the mash tun
yields --> Pre-Boil Volume

  • Evaporation Loss (varies) – water boiled off as steam
  • Cooling Loss (4%) – shrinkage of the liquid as it cools from boiling to room temperature
  • Hop Absorption Loss (0.03-0.09 gal/oz) – wort permanently absorbed by hop pellets or cones
yields --> Post-Boil Volume

  • Kettle Loss (your equipment, can be zero) – wort not recovered from the kettle
+Top-Off Water (optional, your process)

yields --> Fermenter Volume (Batch Size)

  • Racking/Trub Loss (varies) – beer and sediment removed or left behind during fermentation
yields --> Packaged Volume
